MGM Medical College to Start a Ph.D Course

From this academic year, the medical colleges of Indore including the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGM), will be able to start a PhD. course in the clinical branches of medicine.

The higher education department's coordination committee has given a consent to the recommendations forwarded by Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV). After the approval of the recommendations, rules will come into effect for all the medical college of the state.

The standing committee in Bhopal has also approved the regulations of the Ph.D course in different clinical facilities. It has also decided to follow the Medical Council of India (MCI) regulations clearing ordinance constraints. As per the University Grants Commission (UGC), so far only one in MGM Ph.D in community medicine is being offered as it had only one Ph.D holder who met mandatory guidelines for the course. Three years ago, DAVV had permitted the college to conduct Ph.D courses as it fit the criteria.

An official said, "Changes were made in the ordinance, which were approved by coordination committee. The changes will be applicable for all state universities, now. With this, medical colleges will be able to start Ph.D course in clinical branches. MCI regulations will come into effect instead of UGC. However, Ph.D candidates will have to undergo screening test and also do course work as per UGC guidelines."
